As we approach America’s 250th anniversary, Donald Trump’s second presidency represents a fundamental break with the previous 249 years. This presidency bears no resemblance to any that preceded it. Rather, it is a concerted effort to demolish our Constitutional system of checks and balances. It is a no-holds-barred effort to replace our Republic and our democracy with an authoritarian government in which a single person—Trump—dominates not only the government, but all aspects of society. In his first Inaugural address in 2017, President Donald Trump warned darkly of “American carnage." Today, sixteen months into Trump’s second term, “American carnage” is less a warning than a threat fulfilled.
